I'm chopping my hair and need your help!
Ella has decided to raise money for Variety Australia by chopping off 14 inches (35.5cm) of her hair. Ella is nearly 9 and has been growing her hair her whole life with no significant haircuts. When she approached her Mum about cutting her hair, she asked what would happen to it. At this stage she was more so talking about a less dramatic cut but when she found out that it would simply be thrown out, she asked if anything else could be done. Ella is generally very interested in recycling and repurposing things. We discussed the option to cut for Variety and talked about how her hair could go to help seriously ill kids. She was a little apprehensive at first - it's a big cut after all - but she's now super excited to help out and looking forward to the chop. She's set herself a massive goal of $5000.
Ella's hair will be given a second life and made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a long-term medical condition – giving back the gift of confidence and self-esteem. Wigs cost families up to $6,000, lasting 1-2 years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth.
Additionally, the money from fundraising will go towards giving kids in need a fair go. This could mean purchasing a new wheelchair for a child with a disability or buying school uniforms for kids who are doing it tough.
