Elaine's Big Chop

I'm chopping my hair and need your help!

This year is a milestone year for me and I have made the decision to make a difference by cutting and donating my hair to be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition.

I'll be chopping off 36 cm on 31 October 2020.

Wigs cost families up to $6,000, lasting 1-2 years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth. By making a donation to Variety - the Children's Charity, you can help provide a wig or other vital equipment to a child in need. Thank you for helping kids in need.

My Updates

New hairstyle

Monday 30th Nov
I’m sporting a new hairstyle and I’m loving it. It feels like liberation for my head. Been getting some headaches, maybe it’s me getting used to being less weighed down 🤪 Needing to work out how much shampoo and conditioner to use now.

You can still donate to my fundraiser, it’s never too late.

Date set! Hairdressers booked!

Tuesday 24th Nov
I got a date that I will be doing the big chop!

28 November 2020 at 2pm

Hairdresser’s booked in and Maisie’s coming with me to have her hair trimmed to tidy up too.

Delayed hair cutting as I got sick

Monday 16th Nov
Work had been really busy and then we have a bit of a breather (with the demersal closure) for a couple of months. I booked out family on a holiday down south with another 2 of our mothers group families and we had the most enjoyable time away.  Maisie caught a bug and being the sharing girl, passed it on to me so I’m sick and that stops me going anywhere public till I get better. The weekends are starting to get busy leading up to then silly season.... with another booking on the Saturday coming up (was going to book the hair salon to finally get my hair cut). So we will wait another 2 weeks...

Short hair style

Monday 26th Oct
Looking for a short hairstyle. Have seen one that I like but not sure how it would suit my very dark Asian hair. Might need to add some colouring to it to make it stand out...?

Date moved to early november

Saturday 26th Sep
I wanted to cut my hair ard my birthday but I didn’t think my hair is long enough (I wanted to have shoulder length hair) so I extended it for another month to cut at end of October.
I saw a gyotaku workshop (fish printing) in dunsborough which is held end of oct we so the date has been pushed back another week to early November.

Last day of my 30s 🤙

Saturday 26th Sep
Today is the last day of being in my thirties. Imagine my mum 40 years ago still pregnant with me and having a 4yo... thanks mum!! Dad would have just started his practise. So would have been quite busy that year. Wow. It’s been 40 yrs dad!!

In memory of my childhood friend Paige

Sunday 13th Sep
Found out recently a childhood friend passed away from cancer. It came as a big shock. We were really close when we were in primary school, doing projects together and hanging out at her house after school and weekends. We drifted apart after going to different high schools but still keep in touch with friends from our primary school days.  I think my new hairstyle might be as short as yours Paige!

I never knew how much I enjoy kids until I had my own and the thought of little ones having to not have lovely hair to show is just upsetting. My little one did not have much hair till after 1!

To mark my 40th, I decided to get the big chop and donate my hair to make wigs for kids that have lost their hair due to cancer or different medical reasons. What better time than now to do something meaningful and memorable (also when I still don’t have too much white hairs!). I was planning to cut it just after my birthday but my hair is just not quite long enough. Hoping another month might be enough or I will just have to have a shorter hairstyle. Planned date of chop is end of October 2020. I have had my hair past my shoulders since 1999, I think. So it’s been a good 20 years I have long hair!

Thanks for all the support
