I’M CHOPPING MY HAIR AND I NEED YOUR HELP!

I’ve decided to do something special to make a difference. I’m cutting my hair and donating it so it can be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition.

Hi, my name is Darnell. I’m nine years old and currently in Year 5 at Barramurra Public School in Oran Park, NSW.

I’m a pretty well-rounded kid. I love learning, especially geography and I also love being active. Outside of school, you’ll usually find me playing basketball, training in Muay Thai, riding my bike, hiking, rock climbing, go-karting, or surfing at the beach. I just really enjoy being outdoors and moving my body.

The reason I decided to chop my hair is because when I was seven years old, someone very special to my heart was diagnosed with a serious medical condition that still has no cure. She has been in and out of hospital and continues to go through ongoing treatments. One of the hardest parts was that the treatment caused her to lose all of her hair.

Even though she deals with a lot of side effects and challenges, she always holds her head high, smiles, and never gives up. Her long, beautiful curly hair was a big part of who she was, and losing it had a huge emotional impact on her. Wigs can cost thousands of dollars, and finding one that feels right isn’t easy. For a long time, she wore scarves and hats to feel comfortable and often stayed inside because she felt self-conscious about how she looked.

When I was seven, I didn’t fully understand what was happening, I just knew that she was sad. So I decided to grow my hair because I thought I could cut it off and glue it to her head. I know now that sounds a bit silly, but I was just trying to help in the only way I knew how.

She told me something I’ll never forget. She said that what I wanted to do touched her heart, and while it wasn’t that simple, I could grow my hair long and donate it so it could be made into a wig for a child who really needs one.

So that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

This is my hair journey and now it’s time to cut it.

I’ll be chopping it all off at the end of May during my school assembly.
